From all the readings on this blog that have been talked about, it has helped my thought a lot and help my understanding of the weekly lectures topics, it definitely made me question a lot on what i would change and do in my projects, as given in the readings it was shown some of the thought process of architects.
I think the readings will help a lot in future projects in term of determining style and materiality and context of what my designs could be and makes me think. i feel i have analysed through these questions and managed to reflect on my work. "Is that particular architect/ style/ material/ etc, a possible precedent for your design work? Why? Why not? Which aspects from that period of time are still relevant nowadays? Are you aware of contemporary architects following that particular trend?" In conclusion the weekly readings from architecture in contexts have helped me a lot in understanding my research and extra information as the information and data gathered match and I was able to use some of the information that I found out with in the essay such as the video from reading 3 which helped me a lot to understand Zaha Hadid work and the influence of constructivism has on her work. By looking at the specific video it helps me to research about Malevich and supremacism. Readings for each week really helped in parts of the essays for example Bauhaus1919-1933: Weimar-Dessau-Berlin ha extra information that supports the information from the weekly lectures, even though felt some of reading were not directly connected to the topic that we had on the day as it talks more about backgrounds, I found reading about the social affects and philosophy helped the understanding of the topics and help my reasoning with in my essay.

Venice is the base of la binennale di venezia which is an exhibition promoting exciting works and creativity. This is one of the most influential and important event.
its hub for architectural innovation. Especially a place where new innovation can take place. I did not know much event existed as only once I have heard are from London but it is only an event for architectural firms showcase their best work. MIPIM is an event which architects gather to share their new and exciting ideas, an event for creativity. The event is a gather of the most influential people to create possible links that will hopefully leads to new innovating project. Before the reading I have not read on the topic before or knew about this event. The event is a business event for professionals in the industries. Different ideas form a project can be shared with in the event which will hopefully give the project a push. the reading took us through a journey of how the university building design became what it is today.
It showed a lot about how the building responded to the needs of the client and the purpose that is supposed to be used for. As well as making the space fit the brief, the space is still exciting and inspiring environment for the students. This reflects to one of our project that was given where we had to design a school that was interesting and reflect our own client as well as having the spaces very flexible. We always have worked in context with the surrounding area so the building would affect the students but also effect the social community will have/ surround area. In this we saw how the school as built so that the building will have a huge impact. As well as following the client’s needs the building is good design which In my project I focused sometime too much on the design itself and not enough on what the client actually needs. This treading talked about a different topic and a different area in architectural design, we looked at how different 2 museums designs are. As the movement of people and the flow of the building has to be consider more than any other building types.
As the space has to be flexible, the factors that was analysed and shown in this article was very interesting. Although layout will make such a huge difference in the museum it is also important the environment around it and the exhibition hat is going on in the museum. There is a comparison that can be done between the two and I do get the point of why castelvecchio. Picking materials has always been important in building design when it comes to what type of material to use for the condition and what finish to have.
In every project we have to pick materials and specified our finish to the building exterior at least and sometime interior. Architects uses materials to set out their originality and personality in their design by using the materials to its raw form and natural form. The main idea in this reading was that material should be use to its truest form, meaning that the material should be use that way it is supposed to be represented and look the way it’s supposed to look. As we progress in each projects, materiality and finishing has become more and more important in the design stage, although sometime it is forgotten and not enough time have been spent to research and pick the best material for each of the project. in projects that we were given, I tried not to use concrete as a main material, although I have seen projects that only use mainly concrete or only just concrete. I have always tried to use alternative materials in my projects and explored different option.
Although there are beautiful buildings out there which is mostly made up of concrete but most which are probably what we called bad architecture. Number of concrete shell that he have created over his period of work reached 800, where he created Life size models which lead to his understanding of the materials to be so well and rounded. Looking at this book of material remind me of another book that I have read through about timber for my first project of the year.
In the reading he described the different ascetics of the materials and their “personality” as him using timber in Finland to fit in with the context and surrounding area the way. The article mentioned phenomenally and atmosphere that the architecture creates. We did a project on timber and this reading reminds me a lot of the project as we went through the material selection process. BBC 4 documentary video on how modern architecture formed and perceived.
Seeing postmodern architecture that was shown on this documentary has and I have a strong opinion on the style. Considering the projects that has been given during this year has been based on functionality and context rather than following a style or a movement. Many of the buildings that have come up in the videos are buildings that we all have come across before. Modernism and post modernism had its own beauty it a way although it is not my favourite hat I like to follow nor I think it is as powerful as some architecture which I came across. British architects have certainly made a mark in the landscape of London especially which give London a specific unique feels and sets us out from the modernity of architecture in the European world. The projects shows in the document are very big projects at least comparing to the projects that we have been given during this year. In this interview we look at iconic architecture and their social impact that they can have.
Two main points have been mentioned in this article, one is conservative architects and the other is revolutionary architects. Revolutionary architects are those who push boundaries and create an environment that makes an ideal society. This reading mentions about transgression, which speaks time and usage of building. Many building that are built in modern days have flexible usage and can be adapt for different purposes. |
