Interim Review Monday 3rd November 2014 [Briefing booklet, design sketches in context @1:100 + 2 test models] Final Review Monday 24th November 2014 Portfolio Submission Monday 1st December 2014 |
Who is your client or main audience?
The main audience for my bridge is people who walks along the canal and across from this site, the bridge is to increase the biodiversity of the canal area and preserve the nature elements of the the canal. I'm linking this part together as this area has the strongest separation out of all the canal side.
- connection on the site will give the residential people around surrounding area easier access to the site.
- It will be safer for people to cross as the bridge leads across straight from residential to the retail park.
What is your bridge intended to do, the focal point and architectural language?
micro-urban design that will bring more life to this area in terms of the biodiversity of the canal making experience of pedestrian on foot more pleasant and to engage people to see the beauty of the site while having beneficial impact on the canal.
Where is it located?
the site chosen is located between the first bridge and the second bridge 300 meters away from each other. right opposite from the retail park Sainburys and the small grass site.
How will the bridge preform, does it connect to the context?
the bridge will connect to the context and surrounding area blending and making use of the already available area that's already there.
BRIEF:
- The bridge must be timbered
- up to 2 floors in height (No more than 5 metres)
- Enclosed area of the bridge must be around 300 - 500 sqm.

precedent studies -
Balmori Associates, one of the project is a NY City bridge that's designed to potentially solve the problem of wildlife being hit by a car. they came out with an inexpensive wooden design that's for a bridge. the company called the idea vegetation cross walk, this blends the bridge to the environment which the wildlife is more incline to cross or use the bridge and resulting in fewer deaths and accidents on the road..
The main aim of this concept was that to to keep the bridge as non hi tech as possible so it can be easily installed anywhere in the us. without disrupting the road or the natural environment. By using cheap native wood to each places this structure that actually stores more CO2 than it needs for production; no heavy machinery required. What's more, much of the bridge can be prefabricated, then assembled on site, cutting back on the hours construction interferes with traffic. (Co.Design, 2010)

GRID SHELL.
Gridshell, a timber structure, built for Naples School of Architecture courtyard, University of Naples”Federico II”
- the structure is eco-friendly
- coppice wood materials from the Italian forest (all certified). The use of this material guaranteed that no glue or chemicals were needed in the construction.

The Commonground by Land Collective in collaboration with Fluidity, Diller, Scofidio, Renfro, Olin and Ratio and Context.
Notes
- Because of the shape and composition of the tree trunks from which timber comes, it is difficult to produce directly the larger size sections often required for modern contruction, particularly for beams. For such larger sections smaller timbers are glued together to form laminated beams

biodiversity increases the stability of ecosystem.

Timber.
selection of timber, soft wood and hardwood. when choosing my timber i will need to look at
- natural durability
- the life service requirement of the component
- the in-service environment in which the timber will be used
- whether the timber will be or can be treated with preservatives.
suitable timbers to be used in waters untreated in fresh waters - all timbers which are classed as durable in BS EN 350-2.
Exterior finishes to timber that can be used.
wood stain - can be organic solvent or water based, it is semi transparent, it alters the colour of wood. using this allows the moisture to pass in and out of timber
