Hakemiya Nursery School is a minimalist nursery school located in Kumamoto, Japan, The aim of this project was to have the school “not a small school, but a big house.” The architects were asked to design a space, which can embrace kid’s daily activities, such as eating, sleeping and playing, rather than designing a special space as a nursery school. They decided a building to divide the open space into a courtyard and a small playground rather than having one big playground. This reduced scale allowed kids to feel the building like ‘home’, and it also helped expanding the varieties of kid’s activities in the continuous area of playground, nursery room and courtyard. |
The school feels very small and I feel the colour is Very bland and plain to be nursery
The school feels very small and I feel the colour is Very bland and plain to be nursery. Even though the school is very well designed and very well built. The school feels very homely The good use of out side space being with in of the school grounds |

Designed by Spanish architects Javier Larraz, Iñigo Beguiristain and Iñaki Bergera, the nursery was designed as a rectangular complex with courtyard playgrounds contained behind the stripy walls. The team were inspired by a statement from American architect Louis Kahn, who wrote that the first school would have begun with people who did not realise they were learning. "Drawing a parallel with the story of Kahn, one might wonder about the role that architecture plays in the practice of teaching," they explain The architects added a generous hall between the individual classrooms. "[It] works as a gathering and exchange place around which the rest of the program is distributed and organised," Bergera told Dezeen. |
The school is rather boring as all the designs of the school plans are the same and very square.
The school has the same concept of the first precedent but The colours are more modern and the floor plans are more modern. The school outdoor space is located with in the school in the same idea but more modernise |

he site is surrounded by rice field where wind blows through well. This is one of the areas with much quantity of windgenerated electricity in Japan, and this project is based on the concept of “wind”.
Planning is layout corridor of the ring shape as an image that wind around and each room volume as blade of the windmill.
Consequently, even while maintaining the independence, there is a sense of unity through the corridor and courtyard.
And it secures natural lighting and ventilation by the opening of the high-side windows of classrooms and playroom, and windows of the corridor, which is not to depend on the machine. It is timber and one-story building, and it has low canopies outer perimeter of the building. There is a wood deck terrace under the canopy, and it is possible to use as semi-outdoor space by a large opening of the classroom.
Where children use is shown the timber beams and it expresses that it is timber building. Even out of those, lunch room is created a state close to the natural environment by timber fitting of large opening and terrace connect with full of green courtyard. Children enjoy lunchtime in this comfortable space.
The green courtyard can be see and accessed from any place is planned as a place where children create play and discover small from various planting.

The school from space to space is very different, may be hard for the kids to navigate
The school has the same concept of the first precedent but The colours are more modern and the floor plans are more modern. The school outdoor space is located with in the school in the same idea but more modernise. The school has different feelings and atmosphere all over the areas so the play area and eating are very different. The school integrates with the exterior so well bringing light in to the place. |
